What Can You Do If You’re Caught in a Flash Flood? | Colorado Springs Accident Lawyers
Over the weekend, Manitou Springs experienced one of the area’s worst disasters in decades as a four-foot wall of water, mud, and debris raced through Waldo Canyon and crashed into their town. Ultimately dozens of homes and businesses were either damaged or completely destroyed while busted gas, sewer, and water lines shut down large parts of the city. Worse, many people suffered injuries, at least one man lost his life, and as of Sunday two people were still missing.
It’s believed that the man who was killed was in his car when he was caught off guard by the raging waters. A flash flood comes with very little warning, and you could quickly find yourself in a life-threatening situation. So, what can you do if you’re driving and find yourself caught in one?
The first and most obvious answers is to avoid driving through flooded roads or bridges and remember that it only takes 18 inches of water to lift your vehicle. If the water is unavoidable and you find yourself surrounded by floodwater, you aren’t going to want to stay in the car, you’re going to want to move to higher ground. If you weren’t able to get out of your car before it became completely submerged – don’t panic. Roll down the window and release your seat belt. If your windows or door won’t open, let the car fill with water. Once it does, you’ll be able to open the door and swim to the surface.
Our thoughts are with the people of Manitou Springs. The city is resilient and this was immediately obvious as volunteers sprang to work, cleaning up the mess and searching for their missing neighbors, despite another flash flood advisory being issued the very next day.
