Car Accident Ends with a Bang when Oxygen Tanks Explode | Colorado Springs Injury Lawyers
Last week, witnesses in a Colorado Springs neighborhood got to experience first-hand just how dangerous a car accident can truly be. Many walked out of their homes to see a car in flames at the intersection of Highway 115 and Cheyenne Mountain Blvd.
Apparently a car was stopped at a red light when it was rear-ended by another vehicle. The gas line in the car that was struck ruptured and the entire vehicle burst into flames. It was only going to get worse, however.
Emergency crews soon arrived on the scene to attempt to put out the flames. They knew they needed to get the situation under control. What they may not have known is that there were five oxygen tanks in the burning car’s trunk. Inevitably one of the tanks blew up. The sheer force of the explosion sent pieces of the vehicle hurtling nearly 150 feet in all directions. A second, smaller explosion quickly followed.
Fortunately no one was seriously injured in the explosion, although two police cruisers and a Colorado Springs fire department truck were damaged by flying debris.
The initial accident did result in potentially serious injuries though. The man who was rear-ended suffered a back injury, possibly fracturing a vertebrae. The man who hit him isn’t going unpunished, however, as he has been arrested and will likely face charges of driving under the influence of drugs.
